PAGXXIX OstranderChief and Distinguished Investigator, Cancer Genetics and Comparative Genomics Branch, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, USA

Time:  Tuesday, January 11, 8:00 AM (PST / GMT -8 )

Talk Title:  "Big and Small, Tall and Short, Wide and Narrow, and All That Behavior: What’s the Genetics?"

Bio:

Dr. Elaine A. Ostrander is Chief and Distinguished Investigator of the Cancer Genetics and Comparative Genomics Branch at the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health. She received her Ph.D. from Oregon Health Sciences University and did postdoctoral training at Harvard and U.C. Berkley, where she initiated the dog genome project in 1993. She spent 12 years at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and University of Washington, rising to the rank of Full Member and Professor. Her lab built the first genetic map of the dog genome and mapped some of the first disease genes. Her lab has consistently demonstrated that the domestic dog is an informative system for understanding human health and biology. She joined NIH in 2004 and her current work focuses on identification of genetic variants controlling morphologic and behavioral variation between dog breeds, architecture of the canine genome, and the genetics of breed disease susceptibility. Her work has illuminated how breeds were developed and how they relate one to another at a genetic level. She has published over 375 papers and won many awards including the Burroughs Welcome Award for Functional Genomics, Asa Mays Award, Canine Lifetime Achievement Award, NHGRI Mentorship Award and is the recipient the 2013 Genetics Society of America Medal. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and, in 2019, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
