Talk Title: Microbes and the Origin of Animal Species

Bio: 

Seth Bordenstein is an evolutionary biologist and geneticist in the Departments of Biological Sciences and Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. He is an Associate Professor with broad interests in the role of microbes in animal evolution and health, including the microbial basis of animal speciation, bioprospecting archaea for antibiotics, genome evolution of viruses and endosymbiotic bacteria, and the genetics of animal-Wolbachia interactions. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 1997 and 2002, respectively. He received a National Research Council Fellowship for his postdoctoral studies at the Marine Biological Laboratory from 2002-2004. While in Woods Hole, Dr. Bordenstein became an Assistant Scientist in 2005 and served as the founding director of the worldwide HHMI outreach program Discover the Microbes Within! The Wolbachia Project. In 2008, he moved to Vanderbilt University. Dr. Bordenstein’s research and teaching have been recognized with the Chancellor's Excellence Award for Research and the Jeffrey Nordhaus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in the Natural Sciences. His scholarship has been noted in numerous popular science media including The New York Times, National Geographic, Discover Magazine, PBS, The Huffington Post, Scientific American, BBC Radio, general interest books and a documentary on bacterial symbiosis.
